Mrs. Yerkes commissioned this house for herself and her daughter, Mary Agnes, to live in. Mary Agnes was an aspiring artist, and so Van Bergen designed a studio on the second floor over the entrance portion of the house. This extension of the second floor is awkward, sticking out over the alley. Another strange detail is that the first and second story windows have a different muntin pattern. On the first floor, the intermediate horizontal muntin of the windows line up with a trim detail on the interior. The exterior surfaces are: Dark stained horizontal wide board siding up to the second story sills. This gives the house a rustic character. Above that is stucco with cypress trim.
