Because of a shortage of architectural work and money during the depression, Van Bergen accepted an offer to work for an engineering firm doing war work. He was sent to different locations to help design various military and artillery installations here in the United States. He was then assigned to work on the Alaskan Highway Project in Canada performing such mundane tasks as designing temporary living quarters for the workers on the project. During this period, he also collected drafting fees from the Salvation Army.
