Mrs. Spahr (Claribel) was Ruth Van Bergen's sister. While this house was being constructed the Spahrs lived in Highland Park in the duplex which Van Bergen built for his mother Ella and Belle Bemis the mother of Ruth (Mrs.Van Bergen) and Claribel (Mrs. Spahr). The family was a close one and they all gathered often at this cottage. he house has rustic charm with its stucco walls, stained wood trim, rough limestone chimneys and cedar shingle roof. Inside is the typical massive Van Bergen fireplace in the high ceiling living room Some time in the early 1940s the Spahrs received an offer to sell the house. They did so, and then commissioned Van Bergen to design them a newer house a few blocks away on Merton Street. Blue prints and specifications exist.
