Hotel and Convention Center - Project -1960
Santa Barbara, California

          Another idea of speculator, Jim Gildea for whom Van Bergen designed the El Patio Motel.  Van Bergen came up with various "schemes" during 1960 and 61.  Nothing ever came of this project.  From Van Bergen's diaries:

Thursday, April 28
...To Motel 9 AM. re- water softener.  Gildae wants it thruout entire job.  Later we drove over to proposed road extension & he showed me property he might lease from City for 52 yrs.  To build large Motel & convention hall & cottages, a very big project, nearly 2,000,000. job, Here's hoping!  I must have rough sketches by Friday noon…

...I up at 6:30 AM & at new Motel & Convention Hall sketches.  I have a very interesting scheme.  I estimate cost to be about $1,656,300.00  Explained scheme to Gildea over phone this noon.  He to try to put it thru at once…

Wednesday, May 4
...Artram explained new heat & cool system to Gildea & Howard.  Later I explained my sketches for Large Motel - Convention Hall project to Gildea & Howard,  They both very enthused.  Gildea has arranged financing.  I'll meet with him & lawyer etc. re- same Thurs.

Thursday, May 5
...On dwgs all AM.  Met Gildea 1
30 P.M.  He Reno Chackel & I to Maloney's (lawyer) office with my sketches for proposed Motel & Conv. hall.  They all very pleased with scheme.  Asked me to enlarge hall to at least 1000 seats with ample parking.  Also to make perspective of project.  Worked on El Patio dwgs rest of P.M.  Lillora here for dinner & nite.  I at proposed convention hall & Eve.  Parking a big problem.
