Courtney Krich (pronounced "creek") and his wife, Barbara commissioned Van Bergen to design this house in 1952. The house is right next door to the Victor Swanson house, also designed by Van Bergen in East Dundee. Mr. Krich was the Superintendent of the Giertz-Melahn Company, a building supplier. (Barbara was a member of the Giertz family.) Van Bergen made his association with Krich and Victor Swanson (who also worked for the Giertz Co.) when he did some work at Chicago Junior School as architect - Giertz was the general contractor. The building is unaltered and in very original condition, still retaining the vertical redwood siding over the brick base and the original redwood sunshades over the windows. Built on a hill, the building fits beautifully into its site. The garage is incorporated into the lower part of the house, taking advantage of the topography of the site. In the winter, when the leaves are off the trees, the large living room windows provide a dramatic view of the Fox River, a mile or so away.
