A unique design showing Van Bergen's mastery of three dimensional space, this small house has five levels, four bedrooms, three baths, an indoor two-car garage, an 18 foot high tent ceiling and a huge limestone fireplace in the living room, high tent ceilings in two of the bedrooms, a large playroom with fireplace in the basement and parquet floors. Built in 1936 with air conditioning, insulation and copper plumbing, it was state-of-the-art technologically. This house was tragically demolished by a greedy developer who wanted the double lot on which to build two houses to sell and make a profit. This tear-down craze is sweeping Chicago's suburbs, and many other Van Bergen designed homes--especially in Highland Park--are similarly threatened. Some blueprints exist and are dated December 12, 1936.
