Gould Residence - Carleton College - 1939
Northfield, Minnesota

Dr. Gould, before he became a professor of geography at Carleton College, was first assistant to Admiral Byrd on his famous expedition to the North Pole.  Later he became president of the college.
The residence, which is on campus, is best remembered by some for the stuffed emperor penguin installed in a niche inside near the front entrance (that Van Bergen designed for that purpose).
The house is constructed of rough stratified limestone and cypress trim.  It has gabled roofs,  appropriate for the climate in Minnesota.
The house was remodeled in 1963 when the screened porch was enclosed and made into a garden room and the garage was converted into living space.
