In 1911, an article by Alfred Hopkins titled "The American Renaissance" appeared in The Outlook magazine. The piece extolled the achievement of American architects who built in historical forms and was illustrated with examples in Greek, Roman, and Gothic styles. Given the wide popular circulation of The Outlook, P&E felt such a presentation should not go unchallenged--and picked up the gauntlet. The resulting piece, "An American Renaissance?," was published in The Craftsman after The Outlook declined to offer space. This public exchange drew some attention, resulting at least one newspaper article.
