Proposed mural sketch
The image to the left is in
the Rose Valley file, but on the basis of the scale (right for the Lake
Place fireplace but not the Rose Valley cottage), rendering style (Purcell's
earlier 1910s hand) and the quality of the linen (similar in texture to that
of the 1912-1915 working drawing sets) I suspect that it was intended for
the master bedroom fireplace on the second floor of the Edna S. Purcell
residence known as "Lake Place" in Minneapolis (1913). As historical
consultant, I noted the drawing in this capacity for the Minneapolis
Institute of Arts restoration and still think a copy should be exhibited
next to the hearth.
