The Compleat Commission List

Gusto Cigarette Company, project
Minneapolis, Minnesota  1914

YMCA, project
Siang Tan, Hunan, China  1916

Christian Science Church, project
Minneapolis, Minnesota  1914
The series of commissions presented here contains the works of three architectural partnerships: Purcell and Feick (1907-1909); Purcell, Feick, and Elmslie (1910-1912); and Purcell and Elmslie (1913-1921), the final partnership by which the firm is most widely known.  The entries are given in the sequence they appear within the original office accounting system, where some ambiguities exist.  For example, some commission numbers were used more than once, probably through simple bookkeeping errors. Duplicate assignments sometimes occur for later work on the same building, such as additions and garages. These conflicting numbers are suffixed alphabetically in two ways. Where such job numbers were originally amended by the architects, this assignment has been retained to facilitate pre-existing cross-references in the records (e.g. the Parish House and Chancel for Christ Church [Commission Entry 24A-B]). Duplication suffixes are otherwise shown in parentheses, for example, to distinguish between the map drafted for C. H. McHugh [Commission List 18] and the residential design for John H. Kahler [Commission List 18(A)]. Job title information presented here is drawn from original documents. Citations for architectural work are taken from drawings, when available. Other names by which a commission may be commonly known are also given.  Most locations noted as unknown were probably in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Some works credited to P&E appear in separate accounting system, shown below.
